For 22 years they have been man and wife. But lie told her one day last week that he was tired of her. Her answer left him speechless for a moment. Hhe confessed that she was tired of him. It was a blow at his -conceit , Then it became a question how to get a divuree, which one of them would apply for it and what cause of separation would be ascribed. In their dilemma they sought a mutual friend. They told their story of mutual weariness. They asked hisi advice about how to get the divorce over most quickly and with least notoriety. But he said to the husband:*4You are a business man. Here is a sheet of foolscap peper. Take it into yonder room, sit down and write off a balance sheet. Write your wife’s failings on one side. Write lier good qualities and the items of her value to you on the other. Then come back.” To the wife lie suggested that she write her hus band’s good and bad qualities in parallel columns. Tlie man bent to his task. He recalled the shy, beau tiful girl he had met and loved 25 years ago. He remem bered the courtship, her diffident 4’yes” and his ecstatic happiness when she said it. He visualized the wedding and its tremors, the honeymoou that followed and then the years of married life. He saw her watching over tlie lrnby that died. He felt the totich of her hand in com fort when lie grieved. He saw her bUsy al household tpsks. His stirred imagination even reconstructed the scene when, sitting together at church, she slipped her hand softly into his and they worshipped together. He brought his balance sheet back without an ink mark. It was wet with tears. Strangely enough, her balance had a long list of credits and not a single item in the red. The friend of the family knew when need for his advice liad ended. They did not notice him when he stepped outside and gently elosed the door. - W IL L IS T O N , N . ' I»... STEWART NEA Hrrvlcc Writer WASHINGTON — It’s a com monplace that there’s no longer an “opposition party” in Con gress. That is, none to speak of. There are a few “mavericks,” as Repre sentative Berger calls them. B e sides the “mavericks,” there are e few “maveridks,” as Representa tive Berger calls them.., Besides the “mavericks," there are a few more whose brands are blurred These "mavericks” are a genu ine “opposition,” sometimes sup ported. and sometimes not, by tho doubtfnl herd. But they’re not a party. They’re a coalition, and too few. even as a coalition, to signify much. Still, so far as there’s any “opposition” at all, that’s what they are. They oppose the Republican- U>cmocratlc combination. Repub licans and Democrats pretend to fight like everything over issues of no importance. When a really vital issue comes up they decide it’s non-partisan and vote the same way. The genuine “mavericks,” as I see ’em are: Senators Frailer and Norrt«, elected ae Republicans; Senator La Follette, who calls himself "a Republican Progressive)” ; Sen ator Nye, who was appointed as a AND Republican bnt makes his next run as an Independent; Repre sentative Berger, Socialist; Rep resentative La Onardla, who wns elected as a Socialist bnt who al ways classed as a Repnblican be fore; Senator Wheeler and Rep resentatives ' Huddleston a n d An hair and his inheritance Rainey, elected as Democrat«; are soon parted.
