The court martial at San Diego, Calif.- trying Col.
Williams for intoxication on the accusation of Gen. But
ler, has brought out some testimony of unusual interest.
Two dental experts, testifying for the defense, explain
ed that when the puritanic general thought he saw his
host staggering and babbling in a maudlin manner, the
general himself may have been suffering from “ dental
lesions” which impaired liis vision. Toothache, it ap-
jiears, may cause hallucinations.
Furthermore, several witnesses testified that the de
fendant, instead of being drunk when he welcomed Gen.
Butler in what .seemed an alcoholic manner on the ipght
of March fi, was probably suffering from the effects of
an outlandish drug called “ hexyl-resorcinol” prescribed
by his physiciian. That drug, they explained, often causes
dizziness- nausea, etc. '
. So here are new resources for the great American
game of lawing. Here are precedents that may have a
wide application hereafter. Many and many a witness
for the prosecution wiill have his testimony invalidated
by the simple statement that at the time he thought he
saw the alleged offense committed, lie had a dental ab
scess. Many a defendant will come off unscathed by. the
plea that it wasn’t bootleg l>ooze at all, but a docile
patient’s perfectly proper inditlgeuce in hexyl resorcinol.

Glenn Frank, president of the University of Wiscon
sin and philofophizer on things in general, confesses he
has nfcver taken much interest in “ movements,” hut has
now been completely captured by one.,
“ For the first time in my life ” he says, “ I came into
contact with an organisation called Friends of the Na
tive Landscape, g 'body of men and women of a middle-
western state who are determined to see to it, if they
can, that the natural beauty of their countryside it pre
served , against the alleged ‘improvements’ of civilisa
tion.” i
*
It is g worthy purpose, whose value is likely to grow
on people who think it over. Our civilization, while effi
cient and comfortable, is ratlier devastating artistically.
Often it abolishes more beauty than it brings.
The spread of onr cities is especially lamentable in
its effects on the natural charms of the landscape. Allot
ment developers, and often householders too, seem to
think it is necessary to cut down every picturesque knoll
and fill up every pleasant valley or ravine, and turn every
brook into an underground sewer, and cut down forest
trees and plant nursery tree^, in their place^ and sub
stitute hothouse shrubs for natural gfAWTbs.
Fortunately there are signs of a revolt against this
super-civilization and artificial standardization of the
outdoors. In many suburban communities there is a new
tendency to assume that Nature herself knows a few
tilings about landscape gardening.
