— (UP)— The May 1 .issue of
San Quentin prison’s publica
tion— The Bulletin— gives hon
or to the mothers San Quentin’s
inmates did not heed.
The Bulletin for May 1 is dedi
cated to “Somebody’s Mother.**
Lloyd Sampsell, associate editor,
penned the text. It reads:
“She was oddly picturesque
against the forbidding grayness
of the battlements which formed
the massive entrance to the pris
on.
Past middle age, dressed
obviously ln her out-of-date best,
she stood trembling nervously
before the prison gate, the ac
cumulated terrors of her jour
ney furrowed in her brow. Be
hind these walls some one for
whom she’d dare the horrors of
the inquisition or the battle
ments of hell awaited her com
ing, and come she had, to bring
assurances that as always, she'd
share the load he bore. . Some
body’s mother; Man’s most fu
tile and yet noblest endeavor is
the worthy acknowledgment of
love, homage and respect for
hiA mother. May it be said of
the prison that, here, more than
anywhere on God’s green earth,
is the mother appreciated and
the
fullest
significance
of
“Mother’s Day” understood and
acknowledged.’’
