a A . number of common tire
ailments were traced back to
under-inflation.«Among the most
common are elm cuts, tread
separation,
over-beating
and
Stone brutsing in addition to a
more rapid rate of natural wear
and detertoraton.
On the other haqd,
every
pound of over-inflation takes Its
toll of comfert and the funda
mental value of balloon equip
ment Is lost. Other advantages
of low pretsure tires, namely
greater traction, ability to travel
over soft ground without sink
ing and quick stopping without
Skidding.* are also nullified In
a direct ratio to the extent of the
excessive a ir pressure.

The Union’s safety campaign
was Inaugurated some months
ago when investigation showed
that the Aitomobile accident Sit-
nation was becoming acute. Tb»
Union officials went on
the
premise that automobile drivers
were not, as a general rale, de
liberately careless, but rath«:
were victim« of the urge for
greater speed, which is inherent
In so many motorists.
I t was felt that If some means
could be evolved which would
bring home to the careless mo
torist the folly of his actions,, a
halt would be called to the grow
ing total of automobile acci
dents.
The present campaign
which provided (or the utilisa
tion of 1,600 posters ou the
Pacific Coast typifying motorlfg
situations in which careful driv
ing is necessary - and
whMb
carry a direct and positive ap
peal to observe safe driving prac;,
