P R A Y E R :—-“We bl<>i Thee, our God, for thy merey which Is
from everlasting to everlasting; upon them that fear thee and unto
children's children. We keep Thy covenant”
Mr. T. A. Raffety,
Chief, State Traffic Dept.,
Salem, Ore.,
Dear T. A.:
/
There is something that has been bothering me for
quite a while, and you, being head of the traffic depart-
ment of the state, should be able to answer the question
for me.
•
Your traffic officers are ip charge of enforcing the
traffic lawB. There are those who violate these laws,
and are put under arrest. That is all as it should be.
• But here is where the kick comes. Why it is that
your traffic officers, even though they arrest law violators
in this city, or even ’ perhaps sohth of the city, force
that man to travel to Medford, to appear before Justice,
of the Peace 0 . a Taylor? It is donn, times without
number, in this end of the MRte.
One striking example 1kas brohgkt home yeS'ie'rday
afternoon. An Ashland real estate man was arrested
for driving with his brakes in bad shape. He admitted
his fault and was ready to paV the penalty. What he did
object to was being made drive 13 miles to Medford, to
appear before a Justice, and then return 13 miles, when,
he could have appeared before a Justice in Ashland just
as easily. The arrest was made in Ashland, the traffic
officer,- J. J. McMahon was in Ashland and oould have
made it much more convenient for the violator
This is done many times, and McMahon is the worst
offender. He will not bring a man before Justice of the
Peace L. A. Roberts.of this city unless it is absolutely
necessary, and he sees to it many times that it is not
absolutely pecessary.
Why is it that your men will not bring their Viola
tors before Judge Roberts? Is it» as has been rumored,
that they refuse to do so because Roberts will not “ hit
them hand enough,” that he insists that his decisions be
based upon good judgment and common sense? Is it be
cause he will not allow ‘‘back room” decisions to be made
before he decides upon the pepalty which he metes out?
You are in a position to correct this evil. Your de-
pertinent has received some pretty hard knocks through
the actions of certain of your men in this section of the
state, and a little effort on your part might aid in giving
it the prestige it should have. What one poor officer does
overshadows what twenty good ones do. «
Think it over, T. A.
sincerely yours,
n
«
Auntie Ashland.
