A WEATHER OYOLR, 185
Monsieur (L’Abbe Gabriel, “ France’s ¡most distin
guished meteorologist and professor in the University of
Caen,” has come out into the full light of American
notoriety by warning its that “ New York, Chicagp, all
of Canpda and the whole of the northern jiart of the
I nited States will have a bitterly cold winter, which
ought to set in about the middle of December or early
in January.”
The good scientist’s caution is only exceeded by his
reputation. This dire event “ ought to set in about the
middle of December.” If it doesn’t then, it should bo
rebuked. Of course if there is to be a bitterly cold win
ter; the chances are that it “ ought” to be getting busy
by the first of January at the latest.
But the most imjiortant part of the statement is
that it is to be bitterly cold
New York and Chicago.
Ixit’s be fair with the ablx>. He doe« not mean by this
that it is to be cold hv Oregon standards. It is that every
winter in tlie Luke Michigan city. He means that even
Chicagoans, hardened as they are to sleet and blizzardy
weather, will pull up hn extra blanket.
Why? Because forsooth it wus quite cold in the year
1740. In that year it was cold in Europe. The Thames
froze over. The abhe does not tell us what the Seine did,
hut as the Seine is France’s chief river, France must
have seen that the Seine did something unusual. Any-

this cycle hit the world in 1740. Another will smite the
tender air north of the 41st parallel of latitude thin pres
ent winter. The figures are magic — evezy 1H5 fears.

GOLDEN RULE AND NEAR EAST R E L IE f *
Golden Rule Sunday conies this, year on December
8 .. Golden Rule week ends on Golden Rule Sunday. It
is the annual rollcall for the Near East Reief—America’s
greatest overseas charity.
But for those whose hearts are right, every day is
Goden Rule day and every week is Golden Rule week.
Little children are as hungry on Tuesday as on Sun
day, and in Septemher Or June as well as in December.
The calendar has no red-letter days when little chil
dren — or grown-ups, either — can call a truce on hunger.
The world knows the story of how these children of
the Near East came to be orphans. The world knows how
their fathers and mothers lost their lives in the massacres
and by famine or sickness.
Also, the world knows that other story — that better
sto^v— of how the Near East Relief, backed by the
American people, stepped in at the hour of darkest
despair and saved the children — gathered them in from
street and deserted hovel and blaring! dasert, or found
them freezing and starving, dad in rags, when the ter
rible winter set in, out there in Asia Minor."
The world will not be content with merely saving
them and then leaving them helpless and unprotected.
Americans still have this sacred duty before them —
continue to feed and shelter and clothe a n d train for
citizenship the helpless little ones who can look nowhere
else for these things. -
Observance of Golden Rule day may be as elaborate
or as prefunctory as you like. The important thing is the
giving of a contribution, or. the signing of a check whioh
may arrive in time to drive from some little face the
shadows of misery and dispair.
