WASHINGTON, Dec. 2.—(LP)—Safeguarding Uncle
Sam’s vast estate of natural resources lias been Secretary
of Interior W ork’s principal task, lie stated in his annual
report today.
IWork explained bis policy on teelamation, water
I>ower, coal, oil, mineral, grazing and timber leasing in a
general conservation program. •» —
Conservation of these resources, meaning economic
use without waste and an intelligent distribution as to
time, is finding systematic application in the administra-
tion of his department, Work declared.
He stated that after a “ hopeless” condition two years
ago an appraisal of reclamation work has been made with
1 lie result that $(>(),0(H),000 in new projects has been de-
laved because of the danger oT over development. ___
“ The acre construction cost of these new projects
will he more than double that af older projects,” said
Work.
“ The cost of developing farms has increased in like
ratio to project construction cost.
“ The prospect for settlement is more uncertain at
this time and without adequate settlement no project is
feasible.
