The Nation, boost- ;ed by itself and its friends as an organ of liberalisn^ is >8 many respects a madhouse Of pngnastic ideas. The ¡rule of the Nation is very close to being that “ Whatever 5» is wrong.” In “ The Drifter” a special writer in the ¿Nation, has this to say of the staff of the paper, He per- haps did not intend to say—but it can be said for him— that the same medley of hectic ideas is to be found in its ^political c ohm ins. Here is The Drifter’s say, in the Na tion of November 4; How his friends, the. editors of The Nation, manage ,lo produce a paper which is not a tissue of violent con- badictions is beyond the understanding of the Drifter. M lien he strays into the office he always finds them Rrangling. They don’t like the same plays; they don’t like the same books; they have different degrees of like >nd dislike for the British and the bankers and the babies, find different ideas upon the way to make elain chowder pnd apple pie. They are alwkys expressing disapproval pf each .other's olothes and suggesting improvement* in she management of each other’s homes nnd the education K each other’s children. When, after these bitter debates, they go off to write editorials in the lonely splendor of their oyer - populated offices, something of the fervor of these internecine debates must communicate itself to their typewriters. But — except on jwlitics, on which he has no opinion» -» the Drifter neatly always feel# that |bey are all wrong. necessary revenus: ■ ___ ’ Salary,— Mayor and Council... "ST10KBR8” OAST 12B THOUSAND VOTES Two men Were running, this week, for mayor of Philadelphia. Thè one called himself a “ Republican,” the other a “ Democrat*4 Presumably, the fact that oue was a Republican in national politics, the other a Demo crat had noting io do with their qualifications to he mayor, and in fact had little to do with théir appeal to voters. These party designations were merely a means for getting on the’tick et <• ■•«■ iti y The Republican, in the eye of election, was dying. 3lis political managers selected another Republican that .•they thought would make a good candidate for mayor, prepared stickers, and circulated these among the voters, ¡telling the citizens of Philadelphia that the Republican 'candidate would die. He did in fact die five hours after ■the polls closed. » *, — The Republican nominee, flying, got 167 thousand .votes. The Democratic nominee, unquestioned off health, ^got 25 thousand votes, * The Republican substitute, ‘with stickers, got 123 ¡thousand votes. J The total Republican vote, if that is a fair way to ¡put it, got 290 thousand votes. The Democratic vote was •slightly more than one eighth. Thus, on this showing, ■thecitizens of Philadelphia voted eight to one for a Re publican mayor. I , Of course Philadelphia is not that preponderantly ¡“ Republican.” * But the incident does show how strongly partisan ,'ixdities is intrenched in some cities. That a political group ,on (he day of election, could send out an appeal, warning ¡voters not to vote for their candidate, but to vote for an other man, suddenly and privately selected, and to secure ¡for this candidate five times as many votes as for the ■other, unquestioned, candidate, is a unique instance, It also shows a sheeplike character of votes that is painful. We do not think it could happen in Ashland, or in most cities of the United States, at least it ought not. Am ount to be raised by levy ..... ........... .................
