MEXICO AS AN ANTI-AMERICAN DUMMY
U rough diplomacy and the exercise of of international

The attack that is being made by California public
s'itereats as well as by Arizona and other states on the
development o f /American capital with Mexican and Or-
E ntal labor on the Mexican side has brought out a new
. ffort of these “ Mexican” interests. They declare that
a heir engineering investigations show that the under-
f round water basin that they are tapping does not get
iis renewal from "the Colorado river at all. ^Tliero is a
j.‘Uess offered that it comes from the Gila, an Arizona
»(ream. Back of this there is the hope that the water
does not come from any riverr-but just soaks in, in some
C liraeulous way.
While an effort that would show that this pumping
r vstein in Lower California was not supplied from the

FREQUENT REVIVAL NECESSARY

“ Go to Church Sunday” had a gratifying reward in
' Ashland iu attendance and in interest. It proved a
■nrthy feature of concerted attempts to display to the
_ ] >ublie in general the activities of the churches o f this
«listrict as ¡»laces of worship and of spiritual diversión.
I/et no one sup|>ose that there is anything unworthy
in such undertakings. All through the ages it has been
known that the faith that is in us must have outward
expression in forms of disjilny. There is nothing objeet-
jonal even in theatric methods provided only that the
object in view lie kept sincere and the methods straight*
forward. To “ go into the highways and hedges and

often, out of the great unknown of inspiration, an in
crease in effort that sets life at a new key. In churra
•organization, evangelistic meetings, missions, camp
’m eetings, whatever we may call them—there are recur-
ring efforts needed to revivify the usefulness of religious
£ organizations to men.
Using a commonplace term, we call this “ advertis-
’ng.” Bt, Francis of Assisi, John Knox, the Wesleys and
Whitfield, William Booth — all advertised the spiritual
, roods they had. Ko must we, if we are to be of use to our-
‘ i elves as well as to those around us.

i equirel. And we in the United States can anticijiate
i hat if “ Mexican** interests become dependent on any
seepage into subsurface basins from an American river,
’ his water source will he defended, as against any Amer-
□eaii develojuneut, even at the cost of huge subsidies to
i.ny Mexican administration.
As it is, there is to be observed, during the last
sew years, a notable increase in interest and respect of
¿his Los Angeles “ Mexican” capital for any Mexican ad-
'lunistratioii, whether of Ohregon or Calles or whomever
at may lie. This capital may .find it necessary to fight
'American development, through the diplomacy of the
¿lexicon government.
It is of course vain for these capitalists to imagine
ih a t their pumping systems on the Mexican side of the
border can get water from any inexhaustible underground
j asins. There is no basin that is inexhaustible.
There is an area of 175,000 acres of cotton cultivated
. n the Mexican side of the border in Imjierinl valley. Of
his, 145,000 acres is watered from the Colorado, 30,000
3 rum wells. It is claimed that these promoters expect to
jla n t 800,000 to lie maintained by pumping.
This is a movement to build up an un-American dis-
Irict with American money and with a dependence *uj»on
’A merican water, \inder the form of protecting “ Mexican
jnterests.”
