That seems hereditary, because
some time ago, somebody, an

sounded good to me.
Now Auntie, yon Juat let “obi

Insist upon re
stricting the agenda to discussion
of foreign control of Chinese
tariffs.
Britain Is expected to remain
adamant on the Issue of extra-
territoriality In China. A high
Foreign Office spokesman de
scribed the Soviet’s view of tills
question to me as follows:
“ Britain needs the privileges
of extra-terrltorallty for her set
tlements and factories In China,
he aald, "as well as for tho do
mination
of certain
Chinese
markets. But these British priv
ileges are diametrically opposed
to thb Interests of the United
States.
America does not re
quire extra-territoriality to pro
tect her own Interests. America
even Aes a vested Interest In
the abolition of such privileges,
since their disappearance would
give American traders and In
vestors the npper hand In com
peting with the British.
"Japan’s Interests, however,
are divided. Her settlements and
factories derive a great advan
tage
from
extra-terrltorlallty.
But Jajan’s geographic position
— and
possibly
her
military
statua, too— force her to court
China’s friendship.
And that
friendship can only be *won by
complete respect for
Chinese
sovereignty.
Japan can
