A few weeks ago. the council took steps toward keeping the cattle out, and at that time it was suggested that a man be planed In the canyon, to patrol the entire water shed of A th- land creek. In an effort to keep out these cattle. - However, 1 m action was taken on thia sug gestion. Although there • is a fence at the lower end of the canyon, with a locked gate, forever keep ing Ashland people out of the canyon, the aides and upper end of the canyon are unprotected. Cattle, ranging on the higher levels,* are continually drifting Into the canyon and It la a eon- tiuuous fight to keep them out. Much of the laud la the can yon Is owned by the government, and, according to Congressman W. C. Hawley, who was In Ash land a few days ago, the 'gov ernment will not cooperate with the city In fencing in the entire canyon. The government has of- fered this land for sale to tbe city at 22.50 per acre. It may be. according to Mayor Johnson, that it w ill be necessary for the city to put a man on patrol throughout the year, la order to keep the cattle o«t. " I f any of the cattle get on land owned by the city, they w ill be impounded," Mayor Johnson stated this morning. However, he added that he did not know whether the city could legally Impound the cattle which are not ranging on city property In the canyon. " I t la a shame that the gov ernment has placed a fence across the canyon, barring Ash land people from enjoying the beauties of the canyon, but still, these same Ashland cltlien's cat tle are allowed to range through the watershed.” Johnson said.
