TWO BUSINESS SYSTEMS
Old time business was built on the “ Come and take
i t ’’ idea. A man opened a shop.and waited for custom
ers to come. If he waited many years and he gave faith
ful service, they got used to his presence and. did come.
But it took too long a time for the present hustling days.
Modem business is b n ilto n the “ Go get i t ” or solic
iting svstem. The retail dealer buys of the wholesale con
cern th a t so lic its h is trade. He rarely bothers with people
who don’t care enough about h is patronage to come
around and ask for it. He feels that they are so out of line
with the modem tendency, that they are not likely to be
up-to-date and enterprising.
,
The public feel much the same way. T hey usually wait
to see who w ill solicit* their trade before deciding where
to buy. If a concern does not ask for their business, they
are likely to conclude that it is out of the game, or at
least they forget its existence.
’ Soliciting business for a retail store from- house to
house might he all right if it did not cost so much. News
paper advertising talks to a thousand or many thousands
of jieople, while the solicitor is conversing with only one.
Also advertising is studied by the people in their leisure
time when they sit down to read a newspaper, so it ap
proaches them at the psychological moment when they
can be interested.

SCHOOL MARKS
Some of our school and college students feel the con
sciousness of a higher wisdom than the slow old tuners
pisscss. Hence out of the superiority of their preceptions,
they evolve the theory that it makes little' difference how
high marks they get, provided only that they pass.
If 60 is a passing mark, they say, then that is just
as good for their purpose as 90. Also they think th<5v
should select from their lessons the things that w ill he
particular beneficial in the kinds of career they want, and
let the rest go, so far as they can without actual flunking.
And that they should go a little slow on book knowledge,
so as to obtain time for the “ broadening” contacts of stu
dent activities. So they say, anyway.
■
With a new school year beginning, it is a good time
for the students of Ashland to make a choice between
such conceptions of their lessons, and the ainbition for
high scholastic achievement. •
-• ;
Social activities will come as fast as they want them
in later years, but the sw iftly passing and golden student
days will soon be-gone. Better make the best of them.
The value of lessons is not so much the things learn
ed, as the discipline gained in learning them. Slack ap
plication must tertd.to enfeeble the mental power« rather
offer'such a variety, without the bother and labor of
making them at home that it is difficult to imagine
anybody preferring to ^ook them nt homo when
