of what we now call Ashland, their builders had a pur
pose, and that purpose was to bring about a more conven
ient plan of exchanging commodities of life among those
pioneering souls who builded better than they knew for
Those who came after them.
To whatever else we may attribute the existence of
villages, towns and cities, their prim ary function is to
a t lord convenience and economy in the interchange of
the necessaries of life, the administering of law, the pro
cesses of education and religion, and the fulfillment of
social relationships.
Ashland is now known as a splendid trading and
buying center. It has the necessary business institutions
to attract, and the high quality of citizenship to push
onward and upward in its growth and expansion. But
being a trading “ center” is not enough. To lengthen
the radius—to enlarge and expand the trading area of
Ashland should he out constant aim and endeavor. We
should never become entirely “ satisfied” when it comes
to civic and commercial growth.
Though the phrase borders close to the hackneyed
we are urged to repeat th at “ what town has done, town
can do!”
A BUGABOO
N ow they tell us that the Child Labor amendment is
socialism. The country doesn’t fear socialism any more.
It knows that there is no such thing as an organized so
cialist party. Socialism means so many things to so many
«Efferent people that there is no wav of defining it
W hatever we don’t like is socialism, and whatever we
do like it statesmanship. Any time we want to argue
against anything and can’t think of anything else to say,
we say it is socialistic.
I hquestionahly, the tendency of the times is to be
helpful, and if this be socialism, then the country is quite
Generally socialistic. But socialism held up as a bugaboo
does not afright anyone any more. We are doing so many
things that our fathers would have thought socialistic
th at we just laugh and go on.
