(By R. J. Kirkwood, in Thrift Talk)
Thrift is a.much abused word, in fact it has become so
eommon-plaee that it has lost much of its real meaning.
We speak of a man as thrifty, if, on some occasions
we find him exercising economy, or if a man seeks to
i etter his condition, energetically applying himself to his
tasks, or in seeking more lucrative employment, we say he
is thrifty, hut these are only symptoms. These are some
of the things necessary in thrift, but they alone do not
constitute thrift. Thrift entails persistence, loing sus
tained efforts of economy, a constant vigil to stop the
small leaks, and a persistent effort in the face of all kinds
of discouragement, to improve one’s usefulness, thereby
increasing his earning capacity. Continuity of purpose,
a definite objective, the goal, comfort and independence in
old age, with the family reared and educated and equip
ped mentally and morally for a life of usfulness. All
these go to constitute thrift.
Many a man has started out on New Year’s day with

a high resove to save money. He cuts out two for a quar
ter sigars and smokes his pipe. Instead of trading in the
old car on a new one as he had intended to do he decides to
put up with the rattles of the old hack for another year.
r>ut he soon tires of the pipe and when the first warm Fords, Chevrolets
spring days arrive, he yields to the importunities of the

persistent auto salesman, and knocks his neighbors dead
with a new ear even better than the one he had intended
buying. The next New Year when it rolls around finds OTHER SMALL CARS

first. He lacked continuity of purpose. He lacked that!
