An cient Arabic, Order of the. Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, was held in Ashland yesterday. From all the principal towns in Southern Oregon and also from Eugene. Shriners and their ladies gathered for the festive occasion. A local committee received and entertained the wives of the Shriners during the afternoon and early evening at the Masonic Hall. The main event of the program was the large banquet held in the dining room of the Elks Temple, where 341 Shriners and their ladies met and enjoyed the sum- ptuous banquet which was prepar- ed by the Plaza Confectionery and served by girls of the High School. Mr. E. G. Lawrence, representa tive of F isher’s F ioar Company, supplied hot biscuits. Music was furnished by Loveland’s Orches tra. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon seventeen candidates started on the journey across the hot sauds te Mecca, but it was not until 10 o'clock th at they were finally clothed with the insignia e n titl ing them to recognition in the traternity. This fraternity by its wonderful* work in establishing hospitals for crippled children throughout thé United States d u r ing the past few years, has shown th a t it has an appreciation of the serious side of life, concentrating the wealth aud influence at its command to carry out a m arvel ous program along the line of benefitting the unfortunate chil dren of this nation. Those who were initiated into the Shrine ^ re P. S. Anderson, B. R. Elliot, Roy Elliot, Harvey J. Fieid, Peter M. Kershaw, S. A. Kroschel, P. B. Ryannlng, F. E. Shuler, Jam es Taylor and H, A. It has representatives throughout Southern and W estern Oregon. The Masonic Hall was crowd ed during the afternoon and early evening hours by wives of the Shriners, who accompanied their husbands to the city. A local com m ittee received1 the guests, and entertained them until the evening services began. The delay, caused prim arily by the illness of the supervisor E. N. McNeil, who was in char&e of all erection work, has slowed down the job considerably, but with a fresh sta rt and with a full crew on the job, the stru ctu re is fast being raised under the direction of Nelse Hoover, p artn er of Mr. Mc Neil, of the firm. Hoover and Mc Neil. Mr. Hoover had previously been superintending the construc tion’ of a building in Eugene. His p artn er is still confined to the hospital. The first two stories of the stru ctu re are already completed, and an elevator has been instal led to haul up cement used to pour the upper stories. All plumbing and electric work has also been completed on these two floors. The severe w eather and the lack of sand and gravel, have made working conditions hard, and have caused additional delay. The gravel is now being supplied fast enough to keep a plentiful supply on hand for the mix ers, however, and to insure against more -loss of time from lack of m aterial. According to a report from Secretary Frost of the hotel com m ittee, a m ajority of the -sub scribers have paid up on part of their stocks, and there will be little trouble in collecting what is left. Several have paid the entire rate and have taken more stock, while a very small percent are unable to pay immediately. The company is now employing 32 men, and all actual construc tion work is under the direct sup ervision of B ert Thomas, super intendent. Those in charge in tend to raise the stru ctu re a t the rate of a story a week later on. J. A. Churchill. Mr. Church ill is known to be in favor of more norm al schools in the state and Ashland Is the only town In South ern Oregon th a t is petitioning for a new school, although several northern cities, have declared their desire to have one. Senator Dennis wants a norm al at La Grande, Senator Taylor at Pendle ton, and Senator Dunn a t Ash land. A clause In the C onstitution of Oregon reads th at all of the*etate schools m ust be located in, or near the capltol, Salem. ,Years ago the state legislature empow ered the Board of Regents of the Oregon Normal Schools to create four state Normal Schools, one of them to be located a t Ashland. The state lias alw ays held, how ever, th at after the schools were closed, tho Board of Regents did not have the au th o rity to re establish them. Attorney-General Van W inkle, however, holds th at the Board of Regents can create a school anyplace in the state. This is good news to the people who have worked for the re-estab lishm ent of a norm al at Ashland. Many local people hold the same view th£t the Attorney-General gave out. New norm als are now practically assured Oregon. This will relieve the greatly over crowded school at Monmouth.
