The main feature of the even
ing was the play, "N ot by a Dam
Site,’’ which was put on by the
members of the Parent-Teacher
Association.
This play was a
burlesque on the old movie melo
dram a and the cast of characters
included the poor old farm er
whose place was deeply m ortgag
ed, the terrible villian who held
the m ortgage and the sweet young
thing who was the daughter of
the poor farm er. The p arts were
taken excellently and th e play
caused much am usem ent and
laughter. Mrs. Reeder took the
p art of Simon Sweet, the m rm er
and Mrs. Huxley was th e wife,
Sarah Sweet. Mrs. F. C. Homes
played the part of Tootsie, the
young daughter and the dashing
hero of th e play was Percival
Penn, the brilliant young author,
taken by F. C. Homes. The
double-deid villian was taken by
Edwin Dunn.
The fath er died a fte r being
weighted down by th e m ortgage
on the program and in the second
act the au th o r vanquished th e vil
lain in the most approved style,
winning the young girl.
Following the play refresh
ments of cake, coffee sandwiches
and candy were sold.
This entertainm ent i3 an an
nual affair and last evening n et
ted the association a good sum.
The association was very glad to
have the Lithians present to take
part in the program and it is hop
ed th a t the evening will be as
successful every year.

A fter roll call, which is always
an interesting feature, and brings
out many facts of musical mo
ment, the discussion of the life
of Calve was opened by Mrs. Fred
Neil who sketched briefly her
parentage, and birthplace, her re
moval a t an early age to Spain,
her life there, her teachers, her
education, her first appearance
and her w onderful repertoire of
song.
Some of her roles were
mentioned and the fact brought
out th at Carmen was not a favor
ite of the slpger.
Mrs. Bessie Murphy took up
the story a t this point. In her
address the speaker mentioned
her years of study, her interpre
tation of the role of Carmen, and
the creation of a num ber of other
roles. Calve was a globe tro tter,
and her trip, across the U. S., her
journeyings in Russia, her visit to
Turkey where she sang for the
Red Sultan, her stay at the Eng
lish court and incidents relating
to each were graphically told.
The interesting story of her d e
velopment of the “ fourth voice”
and the fact th a t Clave does not
relish criticism were brought out
in this section of the review.
At this point Mrs. H. S. Alk-
ensand Miss Estelle Jones delight
ed those present in playing “ H a

The third in the trio reviewing
Clave’s story of her life was Mrs.
G. a '. Briscoe, who told of the
singer’s fu rth er travels in many
lands; China, Japan, India, Aus
tralia and E gypt being visited.
Mrs. Briscoe also told of her more
’recent visit to the U. S.; her work
during the World W ar and the
routine of her life in her home—
a castle in France. Clave was glad
th a t America was visited during
the best years of her career.
A num ber of beautiful records
were played in illustration of her
lovely voice, emphasizing its won
derful range.
All of the speakers were espec
ially well prepared and the mem
bership feel th a t much credit is
due those who bring these mes
sages to the Club. It was a m at
ter of regret th a t Mrs. Woodside
found it impossible to be present
to lend her voice in the illu stra
