CHRISTMAS DAY
TIDINGS OF GREAT JO Y:— The angel said unto them , Fear
not; for, behold, I bring you good tidingis of great joy., w hich shaJl
ve to all people. For unto yu is brn th is day in the city of David
a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.— Luke 2 :1 0 ,1 1 .— PR AYER: —
O Thou Lord o f Life, be Thou born anew in us, and then w e w ill pass
tai daily good tid in gs and great joy to others until all people have
i>..elved them .
THE GREATEST DAY
Tomorrow we celebrate Christmas Day, without
question the most memorable day of the year. For tomor-
* ow, no matter who we are, where we may be, rich or poor,
high or low, carries with it memories of Christinas Days
Sone by which can never be obliterated by anything which
may come to pass.
To all tomorrow carries with it memories of our
( Liildhood. To some the memories mean the snow and
chill of the eastern states, with the blazing logs in a huge
fireplace, over-hung with the stockings of eager children.
To others, not so fortunate, the memories take us back
to wanner climes, where the white blanket which aids in
making Christmas, real Christmas was lacking. But
to everyone of us, it brings hack memories of fathers,
and mothers, sisters, brothers, all eager to help in making
the day the brightest, the most delightful of the year.
The celebration of the birth of the Christ has de
veloped into a season of extending good cheer from one to
another, until today the best organized efforts of our fra
ternal, civic and religious societies are concerted in
spreading cheer and comfort, joy and thanksgiving to
every home and to every child. In this we have developed
the trait of giving material things, not alone, hut of ex
tending to all the spirit that prompted the utterance,
“ Peace on earth, good will to men.”
There is significance in the fact, that more than
nineteen hundred years later, the world celebrates the
birth of Christ. The announcement of the angel of the
Lord was truly the-world’s best news.
And to you, dear readers, The Tidings, in the spirit
of the season, wishes you a very Merry Christmas, and a
Happy New Year.
SONG AT CHRISTMAS
Children’s voices raised in song, on the streets or in
places where weary souls and eynical hearts may hear
them. At Christmas!
•
It is a happy fashion. It brings joy into the hearts
rf the children through doing something that makes others
happy. It is exercise in the Christmas spirit.
If you know anyone who is helping in the movement
lor Christmas carol singing, tell of your appreciation.
They will like it.
And we will have more carols.
May you have a
Christmas that wifi
linger long in the
treasure chest o f
your memory.

THE ALMOST PITIFUL CLEAVER
The case of Cleaver is almost pitiful. Totally incom
petent and utterly lacking in balanced judgment, he has
nialadministered the office of state prohibition commis-
: Hner since the day of his appointment. Surrounded by
ether incompetents and worse, appointed by himself as
aides, he has never done anything right, because he didn’t
know how and couldn’t. He has been the heavièst single
liability of the Pierce state administration, and that is
saying much, because that administration lias many lia
bilities.
There is nothing surprising in Cleaver’s latest faux
pas, in raiding the steamer London Merchant and seizing
its liquor which was being kept lawfully under seal. It
is not surprising that Cleaver, as he now confesses, did
not know that he was violating the state law and the fed
eral law and an international treaty in making that raid.
It is *not surprising that, as he further confesses, he did
not understand the extent or limitation of his own official
authority and powers. Nor is his utter self abasement in
his apology surprising. None of it surprising, because
he is Cleaver.
The pity of it all is that the occurrence will be water
°? ; ? wheel of those who seek abolition of the state pro
hibition enforcement department, and who will ih all
liklihood make the effort at the coming .legislature.
Even the best of us would be “ criminals” if enough
a&lly laws were passed.
Again, at this glad season
