The pen owned by A. Bert Freem an ¡9 in second place with a total of 15 eggs. Since the contest closes at six o’clock this evening, there seems but a small possibility of F reem an’s birds overtaking the pen owned by Gallatin. The two pens ran neck and neck for the first twro days of the contest, being tied with eight eggs each W ednesday evening. On Thursday, Freem an’s pen fell far below their record, only one egg being produced by the pen, while G allatin’s pen continued their four egg a day record, giving them a lead of three eggs. Yesterday F reem an’s* hens produced five eggs, but every bird in the Galla tin pen produced an egg, making a total of eighteen to fourteen for F reem an’s birds during the con test. At noon today G allatin’s birds had not produced an egg, while F reem an’s entries had laid but one. The work of crating and shipping the six hundred birds entered in the show started late last night, and continued through out the day today. Many of the birds are locally owned, and their owners were on the scene early to take home th eir fowls, but the work of getting ready for ship ment the large num ber of bird« entered by raisers throughout the state was occupying the attention of a large num ber of volunteer workers. TREES ARE TO LINE HIGHWAY BETWEEN tween Medford and Jacksonville the five miles of highway will be lined with English w alnut trees. A rrangem ents for buying the necessary num ber of trees were completed Thursday by G. A. Gardner, retiring county judge of Jaekson county. “ The movement is backed by the cham ber of com merce of Jacksonville,” explain ed Judge Gardner, “ and the trees will be planted inside the fences, so th a t tourists cannot raid the trees when they are bearing a crop. The farm ers have agreed to the plan, and all has been a rran g ed for except the actual shipment of the stock, and the trees were contracted for today.” Judge G ardner retires from office next month, and his last appearance before the highway commission in his official capacity was made this week, when he sought to have cleaned up some odds and ends in Jackson county. The county has fared well a t the hands of the commissions, because Jackson county has always come forward with a proposal for lib eral co-operation, and the con» mission has displayed an a tti tude of helping counties which displayed a willingness to go 50-50.
