The question is, will we co-operate with these help

A STEP FORWARD
Another big stride in civic improvement was taken
here Friday night, when the contracts for the construction
of our new Lithian hotel were awarded. Another step in
bringing true the dream of leaders in the city’s affairs
was taken, for with the awarding of the contracts auto
matically comes the assurance that the building was
under way.
Soon materials and men will he moving into Ashland.
The effect of the work will then he felt in the added pros
perity of the city. More money will he placed in circula
tion. More families will settle here, some of the mtempor-
arily perhaps, but many permanently. The payroll each
week will total thousands of dollars, and this money will
be spent right lie? e in Ashand. Surely this effect on the
business of Aslila d will repay for the work and worry
and investment in conducting the construction and pro
motion of the hotel. The advertising and prestige to be
gained by the city will be pure net gain, while the divi
dends which the hotel is certain to pay the stockholders
will be even more “ velvet” for most of this money will be
either invested or spent ift Ashland.
That the contractors who are to build the hotel are
showing the right spirit was proven when Mr. McNeil,
one of the members of the firm who will do the general
construction work announced that practically all the ma
terials will be purchased in Ashland, and Ashland labor
will be used as much as possible in the construction work.
Surely this enterprise is a better investment than we first
thought.
MAKE YOUR BUSINESS SUCCEED
Small retail dealers should advertise consistently, if
they advertise at all. They should plan a campaign as a
whole. These are the recommendations in a pamphlet,
“ Small Store Advertising,” issued by the Domestic Dis
tribution Department of the Chamber of Commerce of the
United States.
“ Ever)’ merchant,” the Department says in its fore
word, “ must make himself known in order to conduct a
profitable business. This is done in various ways, the
greater part of which is described as ‘publicity,’ and of all
these ways, advertising is the most effective.” The pur
pose of the pamphlet is stated to be: “ To enable the own
er of the small retail store to make the most economical
and effective use of the money he has available for ad
vertising.”
“ Although every repetition of an advertisement, a
circular or a letter costs money,” says the Department,
“ Occasional, hit-or-miss advertnsing is usually a loss;
whereas steady advertising of the right kind is sure to be
productive. The retailer whose business justifies adver
tising in newspapers will do better to run a small adver
tisement every day than to run a large one once a week.
“ This principle applies to all forms of publicity. If
form letters are sent out. it is best to send them regularly;
if handbills are broadcast, it is best to broadcast them
regularly; if window advertising is used, the displays
homely. As Daniel W ebster put
it, the foot is “ th a t p a rt of an
anim al upon which it re sts when
standing or upon which it moves.”
But never a word about any beau
ty.
But “every dog has its day,”
and it .seems th a t today is the
day belonging to “ feet.” Not only
are they beautiful, but they are
full of character, scientists say.
Experts can take one good look
at your feet and tell w hether you
are artistic, w hether lazy or lux
ury-loving, w hether am bitious
and practical.

•
Dr. W illiam M. Scholl, notëU
orthopedist, is among the first
to give due credit to the feet.
“ Physical as well ' as mental
qualities and hereditary charac
teristics are shown in the foot,”
declares Dr. Scholl. “ Modern
science has gone to th e foot to
study character, for it is here
clearly and infallibly shown.
In Milwaukie Dr. W illiam H.
E rfert, orthopedist and chiropo
dist, who has worked w ith feet
for more than sixteen years,
agréés fully with Dr. Scholl.
“ Take the long, narrow foot, for
instance, with long toes and well-
shaped nails — the possessor of
such a foot is alm ost always one
of artistic tem peram ent. Such per
sons love luxury; they a re Im
provident, as a rule, and emo
tional — and very lovable. Such a
foot usually has soft skin and Is
deliberately moulded. A rtists, m u
sicians and actors often have
such feet.
Practical F oot
“ Then there is the foot of the
opposite extreme — th e short,
broad foot. The professor of this
foot is practical and very often
apt to be a success in business.
The concrete things of every-day
existence are of chief importance
to possessors of this type of foot,
while the a rts get bu t little a t
tention from them .”
