One of the worthiest suggestions made to The Tid
ings recently was that a movement should be started to
preserve the natural beauty of the Ashland-Klamath
falls highway by arranging so that the timber along the
beautiful driveway would not have to be cut for. commer
cial purposes.
It was stated that practically all of this timber bord
ering the highway was owned by private interests and
that, unless arrangements were made with the owners
this timber would probably be cut in the near future.
’
The government, by special congressional legislation
could exchange timber rights farther back from the high
way, but close to the present holdings of the l-umber com
panies, for tlie timber rights bordering the highway.
Similar arrangements have been made with the owners of
timber on the highway in the region of Bend, according to
our informant, who said that lie felt sure the owners of
the timber along the Ashland-Klamath Falls highway
would be glad to enter into such an agreement.
It is said that sawmills are operating all along the
highway and that it might be only a question of a few
years before the highway would he denuded of the
beautiful timber, which makes it one of the most scenici
roads in the west.
All Southern Oregon should unite in this movement
to preserve the attraction ot this highway. A c o m p a r is o u
