|HB alarming increase In in
fectious diseases through
out the country has stirred
national, State and munici
pal health authorities to-
extraordinary activity to stem the
tide of sickness and remove the
causes of death. The officials seek
ing to prevent this wide spread of
illness are calling upon the public
to aid them in their fight, because
most of the disease now rampant is
due mainly to public carelessness
or neglect of ordinary precautions.
In the opinion of Dr. Herman N.
Bundesen. Commissioner of Health
In Chicago, there are on an aver
age 3.000,000 persons ill all the
time. He says th at forty-two per
cent of this illness is preventable,
which means that every day there
are over a million men, women or
children shut in and suffering
when they could be healthy and
happy had they applied personal
sanitary measures.
The recent announcement of the
United States Public Health Ser
vice that smallpox has had out
breaks In thirty-five States has
called attention to the fact that
most of the cases of this disease
are carried from one city to an
other and from one State to an
other by sufferers who fall to take
proper protective measures.
It has been found that much of
the communication of diseases is
<ue to carelessness in the use of
tnnking vessels. An investigation
in Chicago, reported to the General
Health Bureau, gave the results of
analysis of twenty common cups
er glasses. Nine were taken from
schools, three from hotels, five
from railroad depots, two from
stores, and one from a children’s
home.
All of these revealed the pres
ence of germs to a dangerous de
gree. It was evident that these
glasses carried virus that would
spread pneumonia, diphtheria, in
fluenza and other general and con
tagious diseases. The Chicago bac

“It need hardly he said,* con
cluded the report, “that the Com
missioner of Health is heartily In

and that their value from a sani

Dr. Frank J. Monaghan, Commis
sioner of Health In New York City,
says:
“When any one 111 from an Infec
tious disease drinks ice cream soda
or any other drink at a public
place, his saliva touches the glass.
This glass if not properly cleansed
will transfer the saliva and the
germs through the drink served
the next person. Thus, It does not
demand any Imaginative process
to understand how the common

diseases.
“Avoid using the common drink
ing cup,“ he advises. “When you

where yon can see how the glasses
are cleansed, do not give your or
