OKLAHOMA CITY, Dec.' 30.—
Kian and anti-K ian forces in Ok
lahoma are organizing for a gi
gantic political campaign in the
1924 general elections.
Since the im peachm ent and
ouster of Governor J. C. W alton,
who staged a spectacular cam
paign against the “ Invisible Em
pire,’’ beginning in Ju n e and
reaching its climax when he de
clared the en tire State under m a r
tial law, adherents of th e form er
Governor have taken up his fight
to force the Kian into the open,
R epresentative Jom es Taylor, of
McAlester, and J. W. Callahan, of
j W ilburton, a Farm er-Labor mem
ber of the Legislature, said in an
interview.
“ The so-called anti-K ian bill
passed by the recent extraordin-
! ary session of the Legislature is
ju st the same as no bill a t all,”
R epresentative Callahan declared,
"for the ‘unm asking’ provision in
the bill keeps the klan from com
ing under the category of ‘m ask
ed bands’ because it stipulates
religious organizations parading
in masks and robes do not come
under the prohibitory regulation.
The Kian has always carried on
its parades and dem onstrations,
carrying signs, such aa: We put
Bibles in schools.’ ‘We believe in
P rotestant schools,’ etc.
“Make-Shift” Decried
. “ The people of the sta’te, who
really did want a law enacted th a t
would unmask the Kian and lay
bare its membership like th a t of
any other secret organization,
have lost faith in the legislature
I since it passed the m ake-shift bill,
and already, in my section of the
j state, petitions are being circula-
i ted which will w rite an amend-
| ment to the Oklahoma Constitu-
; tion and pass A ldrich’s Antl-Klan
j law .’’
Aldrich Blake, form er executive
counselor of Governor W alton,
who was “ fired” by the form er
Executive, mad*e public a state
ment th a t he would carry the
Kian issue into every precinct in
the state when the Governor took
issue with B lake on the way in
which he wonfd conduct the cam
paign against the Ku Klux Kian
in Oklahoma. He is reported to
have obtained more than 5,000
signatures to the initiatory peti
tion, which would require approx
im ately 25,000 signatures to have
it placed ont he ballot a t the next
general or special election.
Opposition Grows
“ The Ku Klux Kian is fighting
under cover and is dabbling in
politics of the state, and there
seems to be justification of ju st
such an organization to take the
