No Quarontine On
Eel Worm In West
SALEM, Or., Oct. 6— No govern
m ent quarantine is to be established
against the Pacific coast states by
reason of the stem eelworm in alfal
fa and clover according to a dispatch
received by the state departm ent of
agriculture from W shington, D. C.,
where the governm ent quarantine
board held a hearing on the advis
ability of adopting such a m easure.
R eports indicated it was only in
moist or irrigated sections of the
west th a t the pest thrived to any ex
ten t; th a t it was generally d istrib u
ted throughout the United States
and Europe, and th a t a quarantine
against certain states was im practi
cable as long as the pest was being
brought in with seed shipm ents from
Europe. Unfavorable climatic con
ditions generally will be relied upon
to keep the pest from becoming a
real menace. The desirability of
local quarantine was suggested for
protection of new irrigation projects.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 6— Def
inite plans for the reunion of the
F irst Army Division of the World
iWar here were announced today.
Four hundred thousand veterans of
the division will meet coincident
with the American Legion national
convention Oct. 15-19.
This famous organization
was
composed of regular arm y men and
has an unsurpassed record on the
great war. It was the first American
division in a sector, the first to a t
tack the Germans and the first to
be cited singly in orders. Up to the
arm istice it suffered 25,076 casual
ties of which 4,419 were deaths in
action.
The program will begin with a re
ception and dance on the roof g ar
den of the W hitcomb hotel, the
evening of October 15. The hotel
will be used as headquarters for the
division.
Tuesday, Oct. 16, the division will
march as a unit of the big national
ex-service m en’s parade. L ater for
mal reunion will be held at the St.
Germain restau ran t.
Sight-seeing trips around the bay,
with a visit to the sixty fighting
ships of the Pacific fleet, ordered
¡Q for the occasion, will complete the
convention procedure.
