HOW A RIP-ROARING
RADICAL WAS TAMED
By JOHN OAKWOOD
T he b est sto ry of th e tam in g of a
radical I have ever read is told by
A. B. F a rq u h a r in his book “The
F irs t Million the • H a rd e st.” It
throw s m ore light on the m eaning
of capitalism and th e fu tility of so
cialism th an a lib rary full of books
j on sociology, econom ics and poli
tics. H ere it is as F a rq u h a r tells it:
“T he best an tid o te for acu te eco
nomic in sa n ity is ow nership of
property. My favorite exam ple is
O tto Steininger. He was one of my
first em ployees and was a rip-roar
ing a n arch ist. He in sisted th a t all
w ealth cam e from the w orkers and
th erefo re should go back to the
workers. He was p a rticu larly bit
ter a g ain st bis landlord, and hardly
a week went by th a t he did n ot an
nounce th a t he had definitely de
cided th a t he would like to shoot
the landlord the next tim e he cam e
around for the ren t.
F inally I
asked him sm ilingly a fte r one of
these o u tb u rsts:
Buy, Don’t Shoot
“ ‘W hy d o n 't you buy your own
house instead of shooting your lan d
lord? T hen you would not have to
pay any ren t. If you do shoot him
you m ay get into trouble.’
“He did not th in k m uch of the
idea ap p aren tly , but in a day or
two he asked m e how he could buy
the house. I au sw ered : 'T h a t house
can be bought for $800. You are
gettin g good w ages. I will buy
th a t house for you, tak e $4 a week
out of your w ages, and in less than
(our y ears you will have it paid for.’
“ He w ent off again. T he next
tim e he cam e back it was with his
wife. He said : ’W e a re going to
buy th a t house, but since we have
no children you can tak e $10 in
stead of $4 a week out of my pay
envelope.’
”1 bought the house, and then
O tto’s chief concern was to get it
paid for, which he did in a little
m ore than a year. T h ere was a n
o ther house next door to him. In a
short while a fte r he had paid for
his first house he sidled up to me
and said:
“ ‘I can buy th a t house next door
for a thousand dollars. Now th at
we have no re n t to pay we are go
ing along good. W hat wou’d you
think about5ne buying th a t? ’
“ He bought th a t house and joined
ic.

use of it have increased its possi

h ith e rto u n th o u g h t of. A dvertising
has long been ham pered in its use
by precedent, tra d itio n , conventions
and prejudices, which, under an aly
sis and experience, find little to
w arran t th e ir existence. G radually
the falsity of th e ir claim s is being
proved.
W e w ere told for m any years n
th a t it was undignified for a bank '

and th is edict, born of som e su p er

was intellig en tly challenged and it I
was discovered under an aly sis th a t

w hether it be goods or services,
can, with tru th and dignity, be ad

In the logical developm ent of this

we have seen m any of our banking,
