CHAPTER XIII
T hb S wamp
When “Mr. Jones’* looked up and
saw the octopus wind one of its
tentacles around the waist of the girl
he loved, he plunged fearlessly at
die devil-fish, landing squarely on
its cruel head. The denizen of the
deep suddenly released the girl and
started after the young man.
•Pearl Travers immediately took
advantage of the opportunity and
lifted herself upwards, through the
trap-door. Then, seeing her revolver
lying on the floor, she quickly seiz
ed it and began to pump lead
through the trap-door at the octo
pus. The enormous creature began
to writhe and squirm in pain.
“Jones” saw his chance and swam
quickly past it. Pearl saw him com
ing and dropped the end of a blanket
down through the aperture. The
young man seized it and climbed up
to safety.
Before either of them could make
a move, Fucheros and his compan
ions began battering on the door of
the room with an axe. Pearl recov
ered her senses first and crashed a
chair through the barred window.
Assisted by “Mr. Jones,” she drop
ped from the window and ran down
the alleyway. Ahead of them, the
two young people saw the Three
Men From Afar disappearing into
the jungle, and, knowing they had
some of the coveted stock certifi
cates, “Jones” urged the girl to
more speed.
In the general room, Fucheros
halted his men who wished to con
tinue the chase. “Wait, wait, my
friends,” he counseled. “It is better
we are rid of them all.”
A servant came quietly up to the
innkeeper and whispered: “Senor,
I saw with my own eyes your
daughter, Benita, unlock the door
which let the American girl out.
And with my own eyes I saw her
give the American girl a pistol—I
swear it!”
Fucheros’ eyes were beady and
cruel and he looked around at his
daughter, but as their glances met
his expression became kind and
gentle. He pinched her cheek play
fully, stroked her hair and drew
her aside.
“Darling, mia,” he smiled, “I
wish to see you—alone. Will you go
upstairs and wait for me?” The
girl, fearful, did as he requested.
Farther in the jungle, Pearl and
her champion were following the
foot tracks of the Three. Both were
highly excited and could hardly
waif for the time when they would
overtake their enemies.
“See? It is easy to follow them!”
“Jones” exclaimed. “If they get
away from us now, the treasure is
lost forever.”
But Pearl suddenly stopped in
her tracks. “I can’t—I can’t go on,”
she said. “I can’t go away and leave
that girl, Benita, to that old beast,
Fucheros. If he finds out she helped
us, he’ll kill her!”
“But if we lose these Three, we
lose everything,” “Jones” argued.
“More than one life depends on it.”
Pearl determined to aid the girl.
“That girl stood by me,” she re-
lied, “and I’m going to stand by
er—treasure or no treasure. I’m
going back. You go on and we’ll
follow you. Do it that way, please,
because I ask it!” She continued to
plead lovingly with the young man
and finally won her point. After
kissing Pearl tenderly, “Jones” left
her and pressed on into the jungle.
When Pearl returned to Jo Fuch-
;ros’ place, she heard strange
sounds coming from a room. “It was
>rou, little one,” a cruel voice was
saying, “who let the American girl
free! I promised you something,
ih, if you should be so indiscreet
is to interfere?”
A scream followed. That was
enough for Pearl. She rushed into
fie inn, dashed, up the stairs into
fie room with her pistol drawn. Ar
riving on the scene just as Fucheros
*’as about to strike the girl with a
whip, Pearl struck him over the
lead with the butt of her revolver.
With a groan, Fucheros sank to the
floor. Then she turned to Benita.
“Come,” Pearl said, “you can’t
stay here—you’ll have to come with
ue! i’ll take care of you, and I’ll
iet > >,our help. You know the
jungle."’ Gratefully, Benita follow-
id her from the house.
