But Jude Deering was already carrying out his threat to see “Mr Jones.” As he was walking toward an impressive looking brownstone house in the Seventies, he saw a mud-caked car pull up and three mysterious looking men step out. Deering hastily concealed himself and watched them take a large, blanket-covered bundle from the car and carry it into the house. Daily Fashion Hint THAT DULL ACHING Don’t worry and complain about 99 “Well,” the young man said, what do you wish me to do?” “Write to Miss Travers,” the lead er answered, “ and tell her to hand over to us all of her Central Build ing stock—if she wishes to ever see you again.” With this, “Mr. Jones” became in furiated. “ Forger, liar, renegade— NO!” he ejaculated. “You thought I wouldn’t remember you, eh? You thought that when you came to Malata you could leave the shame of your life back in England! You wrote too good a hand to stay in England—so you came to Malata, and my father took you in because your skin was white! That letter is a forgery, and I will die before I do as you say!” He furiously tried to break the bonds that held his hands, but it was of no avail. His strength had been reckoned on. The leader looked at him con temptuously, and then took from his pocket a small tin box, opened it and . looked at the black powder within. He rudely shoved it under “Jones’ ” nose, saying: “Know what that is, e h ? ” “You devil, you!” the young man shouted. “That is the black ash of the Malata jungle! The black ash that kills men’s souls! For the sake of your own God and your own soul, don’t do that! Don’t burn that hellish stuff here! I will do any thing you say!” “Good!” sneered the leader. Wnte as I dictate to Miss Pearl Travers.” Jones hesitated, but the man’s threatening attitude forced him to write the following: “ For the sake of anything I may be to you, deliver your stock over to the man who brings you this. The penalty I will pay for your refusal is not my life—it is my soul. Jones.” Outside, Deering having seen this much, watched for the messenger to leave in his car, and calling a taxi he followed. When Pearl received the message, she was terrified. She finally made up her mind to hand over the stock, follow him, reach “Jones” and then recover her property. After this was done, the girl hastily put on a soft hat and prepared to follow the mes senger. But just as the yellow man came out of the house, Deering rushed him, determined to get the coveted certificates. Pearl saw all this from her window, and rushing to the front door, she arrived in time to see the yellow man pick himself up, while Deering fled down the street with the stock. The girl decided to follow Deering. After climbing a fence, she suddenly came upon him examining the stock in a coal yard. Picking up a heavy stick she rushed the sur- rised gentleman and planted a eavy blow over his head. Deering sank to the earth with a groan, and Pearl wasted no time in going through his pockets. In pulling out the stock, a small notebook fell on the ground with the fly leaf open. The girl uttered a glad cry as she saw the address of “Mr. Jones.” By this time the yellow man had returned to the brownstone house and told of the exciting events in which he had been the main actor. The leader turned and looked at “Mr. Jones,” and then significantly at the tin of black powder. Deaf to the protests of the young man, he struck a match and lit the powder. “ I guess this’ll settle you, my friend,” he said, and turning to his two companions, he bade them fol low him from the room. A thin wisp of smoke was already beginning to crawl ceilingward while the helpless young man watched, terrified with fear. He tried to hold his breath and keep from inhaling the destructive drug, but it was imposible for him to keep from breathing it. As the vapor be gan to creep into his nostrils, his tense expression relaxed, the shadow of a smile stole over his face, and the more he breathed the deadly stuff, the more his features took on the appearance of a mad man—a lost soul.
