was killed that I would not sell it,
but hold it.” Jude Deering pleaded
with the woman but she was ob
durate.
On every side Pearl Travera
seemed to block Deering. She was
breaking down his morale, and
everywhere he looked he seemed to
see her face haunting him. He de
cided to attempt to forget every
thing that evening and to wander
down to his old underworld hang
out.
When darkness came, rain began
to fall, making it all the more un
pleasant for Deering. As he enter
ed the place he looked around glum
ly for a few familiar faces. He
suddenly drew back in fright, for in
one corner be beheld a Bowery type
of a girl who bore a marked re
semblance to PearL Hastily ques
tioning the waiter, he learned that
she was a Meg Mellon, a girl who
had been around there for several
years.
And then the idea came.
Deering walked over to the girl’s
table and sat down beside her.
“Could you act like a lady for a
few days in several thousand dol
lars worth of clothes if given a gen
erous sum of money?” he asked
after a few preliminary words.
“Say, Mister, are yez tryin’ to
kid me?” the girl answered.
• Deering’s earnestness soon as
sured the girl of his sincerity.
Two nights later Deering and die
girl were enjoying a cocktail in the
former’s apartment. Deering was
very much elated, as the ruse had
worked and he succeeded in secur
ing the coveted stock. Meg had been
carefully instructed how to act At
this particular moment, he laid down
his drink and placed the envelope
bearing the certificates on the table.
With a smile at the girl, he arose
and walked toward his desk. But
while he was doing so, Meg quickly
took the certificates from the en
velope and substituted some pieces
of blank paper.
“I tell you, girl, you’re wonder
ful,” he smiled as he returned to
her side. “You and I will go far to
gether.” And then he attempted to
embrace her.
“Oh, no, Mr. Deering! You don’t
get me yet!”
Deering stopped in his tracks. Ho
had heard those very words before
not so long ago. He quickly looked
at the girl—could it be possible that
she— ? He looked at her searching-
ly and his sharp eyes saw the certi
ficates sticking out from her dress.
With his hands behind him, he
touched the table where the envelope
was lying—and drew out the Mank
paper.
Jude Deering was very crafty.
For several minutes he said noth
ing—he raised his drink and drank
the health of Meg Mellon. Then, go
ing toward the window he pulled
down the shades, and followed this
by locking the doors. The girl was a
trifle nervous at his actions, but she
made no move.
•
“And now Pearl Travers,” he said
suddenly, “let’s lay our cards on
the table! I know you and yonr
game! You would trick me, eh? You
would play dead—you, and your Mr.
Jones, and get the other half of the
parchment and this stock.
Wei?,
you’ve played your last game!”
It can be truthfully said that
Pearl Travers was frightened. She
backed away from Deering, and
stepped aside as the gentleman
made an awkward pounce in her di
rection. Then, eluding him, the girl
rushed for the door—it was locked!
Again Deering rushed her, and with
a quick jiu-jitsu swing Pearl al
most succeeded in throwing him to
the floor.
Before Deering could recover
himself, the girl rushed for the win
dow. It was locked—but she smash
ed the pane and climbed through.
Hardly had she arrived on the fire-
escape when
Deering crashed
through the broken window after
her. The struggle was at close quar
ters now, and the strength of the
man was too much for the girl. Un
able to fight back, she was forced
back against the railing of the fire-
escape—back, back, back! Any mo
ment Pearl expected to be forced
over and dropped many feet below
to the sidewalk.
