Before the girl could speak Neewah turned to Deering and said: “You have come, friend, and everything is as you said it would be. You are a truthful man. Come, I will give you the paper left by ‘Jones.’ It is at the chasm m ill.’* “ But— ” the girl began. “You had best remain silent!” Deering warned. “These Indians hold me in absolute confidence.” And turning to Neewah, he added, ‘You had better lock this trouble- making young woman up.” Pearl’s protests were in vain, and she was forcibly lead into a small adjoining room. Two Indians were» left on guard. After hearing her enem ies depart, the girl looked about At one end of the room was a small window, and looking out Pearl saw a horse tethered nearby. The window was devoid of glass, and picking up a chair, the girl m uffled it with a bit of blanket and crashed it through the rotten wood en bars. Before her guards could recover them selves, Pearl was out of the cabin, on the horse’s back and speeding to overtake Deering. The path-like road led along the cliff, and on the other side of the small stream Pearl ccald see the chasm mill. Further up, a small bridge presented the only means of crossing. An idea came to the girt She dismounted and ran to the edge o f the cliff. By swimming across, she could be able to arrive there ahead of Deering. Without hesitat ing, Pearl made a beautiful dive and began to swim for the mill. She reached the other side as Deering and Neewah crossed the bridge, and both observed the girl getting to the spot ahead of them. With a shout to Neewah, Deering dug his spurs into his horse’s side and made a dash for the mill. When the two men arrived, they saw Pearl’s wet footprints leading up the stairs, but the girl had evi dently been a good strategist, for the footprints became a muddle on the fifth floor. Neewah wanted to hunt her down, but Deering was more anxious for something else. “Hang the girl!” he ejaculated. “It is the paper we want! Where is it? ” Neewah indicated a room on the sixth floor, and both entered. Deering watched anxiously while Neewah began to count the floor boards. When he found the one un der which the paper was hidden, Deering thrust his hand in and pull ed out a tin box. Opening it, he pro duced a piece o f parchment covered with Indian hieroglyphics. “Let us leave this here,” Neewah counseled, “and find the girl. That is part o f my duty. We will return for the parchment as soon as we find her.” Deering was loath to leave the precious document, but he fear ed to gain the enmity of Neewah. Together they left the room, closing the door after them. ♦ Hardly had the door closed when a figure rose up from behind a bar rel in the room. It was Pearl Trav ers! The girl little expected that her hiding place from her enem ies was also the hiding place o f the treasured paper. Without hesitating, she sprung from her hiding place, raised the board, and thrust the doc ument into a pocket in her smart jacket. But suddenly the girl heard approaching footsteps. It was too late to make a getaway from the room. Examining the place quickly, Pearl rushed to a window and look ed out. A heavy cable passed the window only a short distance away, and the girl decided to take a chance by sliding to safety. Deering was furious when he re turned and discovered that the parchment had been taken. He turn ed his wrath on the Indian, but Neewah’s features were impassive. The Indian rushed to the window and shouted to Deering. “You go floor below,” he said, “and me climb down get girl!” Jude Deering did not waste words this time. He rushed from the room, scurried down the stairs and pre pared to head the girl off. He de termined to get the paper at any cost. Rushing into the room below, he hurried to the window and look ed out. A smile of grim satisfaction passed over his face. Pearl Trav ers was unmindful of his presence and was descending— descending hurriedly, as Neewah was climbing down the wire after her. Deering waited for his moment to come.
