W o rk and Play.
Tlie two principal things in life are
work and play. Everybody ought to
do both in proper proportions, sys
tem atically, religiously. To fail to do
e ith e r is perilous. To overdo one and
fail to do tlie other is foolish. Ex
trem ists do not know how to balance
these two obligations aright. One per
son believes in work, work, and more
work. He lias too many irons in the
fire. He tries to do so much work
that be spread? his output over a
large area, und naturally it becomes
thin. The quantity gets the best of
quality. This person’s work soon he-
comes self-slavery.
He drives his
tired, aching body when it ought to
seek diversion and relaxation. He
gets o’.d prem aturely. He wears out
before ids time. W earing out under
these conditions is about as had as
rusting out under other conditions.—
Grit.

In the Barnyard.
The farm and everything about It
looked beautiful, beautiful indeed
witli its yard full of ricks, the pond
full of ducks, the fields full of sheep
and cattle, and the trees still full of
leaves and birds. She flung maize i
about the y a rd ; the hens scampered
towards it and the young pigs gal
loped, quarreling over the grains
which they groped and snuffled for,
grinding each one separately in
their iron jaws, while the pullets
stalked delicately among them, picked
up the maize seeds—one, two, three—
und swallowed them like ladies.— 1
