An unknown monument, it is called
by some, because it is known only to
those who happen to pass it on a lit­
tle narrow gauge branch of the Den­
ver & Rio Grande railroad.
Towering more than a thousand
feet above the jagged floor of Toltec
gorge, on the very brink of a precipice,
the stone stands as a reminder of the
passing of President Jam es Abram
Garfield. It Is In the most remote
p art of the entire range of the San
Juan mountains, a place where one
would least expert to fend anything
but nature’s grandeur.
It was September 26, 1881, that a
special train was carrying members of
the National Association of General
Passenger and Ticket Agents over the
mountains.
President Garfield, who
had been wounded by an assassin's
bnllet, had died a few days before.
When the excursion train emerged
from a tunnel and crept out onto the
shelf that overlooked Toltec gorge it
was stopped. It was the hour funeral
services were being conducted for the

ered rocks and piled them high as a
