states, U nited S tates sen ato rs will
be chosen on Novem ber 7. The dem o­
c ra ts hope to win in a num ber of
them , and thereby reduce m a te ria l­
ly th e republican m ajo rity in tiie
senate, a lth o u g h the republicans are
equally confident th a t they will be
able to c ap tu re several seats now
held by dem ocrats and re ta in th eir
control of the upper cham ber of
congress bv a su b sta n tia l m argin.
The so-called progressives hope for
ad dition to the little group of r e ­
publican sen ato rs, led by Borah of
Idaho and La F o lle tte of W isconsin,
which will stre n g th e n them as a
“ fig h tin g u n it” and w eaken th e rnnks
of th e “ Old G u ard .”
The dem ocrats have two women
candidates for th e sen ate— one in
W isconsin and the o th er in M inne­
sota, b u t n e ith e r is considered like­
ly to win.
W ith th e Maine senatorial elec­
tion already settled by th e victory of
the republican, S enator H ale, the
death of S enator “ T om ” W atson, of
G eorgia, unexpectedly provided an ­
o th er sen ato rial seat to be filled,
w ith a renew al of factional strife
