OLD IDEA
IN UNIVERSITIES
Student Bodies, Fraternally Linked,
Had Their Beginnings in the
Fifteenth Century.
, University life today embodies many
ancient practices in slightly modified
form. College fraternities really date
back to the Fifteenth cehtury, when
universities were few in number and
students were attracted to them from
many lands. The student body nat
urally gathered into groups according
to nationalities, and these groups were
known as “nations.” L ater came the
organization of the student corps in
German universities. In some Ameri
can universities today there are na
tion societies, as the Philippine, Chi
nese, Japanese and Cuban, represent
ing the nations, and the Southerners.
Southwestem ers, Pacific coast and
others representing sections and states
of the Union.
Poor students of the Fifteenth cen
tury drifted from one university to
another, supporting themselves by
singing, begging, stealing and, occa
sionally, working.
The freshm en had a rather sorry
time. In the German universities they
were term ed “Schutzen,” and were
compelled to perform all sorts of
menial offices for the upper class men,
who were term ed “Bacchanten,” and
were often worthy of th at title. From
this practice developed the system of
“fagging” in the English gram m ar
schools. T hat practice traces back
even to the academic schools of Ath
ens. The freshmen, on admission to
a university, were put through an in
itiation ordeal which was the origin
of the present-day hazing.

Is bobbed hair to go the way of
bobbed skirts? Is it merely a m od
ern whim, destined to be discarded
as soon as the varnish of novelty
has worn through?
The picture above is Nazimova’s
answer to such a query. T he pho
tograph shows the great Russian
star wearing w hat history estab
lishes as the coiffure of Salome, the
dancing headliner of antiquity. She
wore bobbed hair, even in her mo
ments of vamping—which means
nearly always. T hat was in the
spring of 28 A. D. A complicated
bit of substraction reveals tnat this
was 1894 years ago.
“If a style has prevailed 1894
years,” said Nazimova, “it can
hardly be called ephemeral. I
think bobbed hair is here to stay.
I t ’s sensible, and for the woman
of small stature, becoming."
Nazimova is soon to be seen in
a motion picture version of "Sa
lante.” It is based upon O scar
W ilde’s poetic dram a; and the art
settings, b y Natacha Rambova, fol
low the draw ings of Aubrey
Beardsley.
