Knud Rasmussen and F ridtjof Nan
sen and also Hlnrieh Johannes Rink,
who was sent north years ago by Lady
Franklin to find her husband, have
given to the world valuable facts about
the customs and lives of the Eskimos,
the Detroit News observes. Christian
Leden's unique contribution from the
arctic regions Is in the field of music.
For years he studied and faithfully
transcribed the Innult melodies. Each
Eskimo, he says, is obliged to compose
his own song, and no person may sing
the song of another without first ob-
taining permission. The mother has
her cradle song. Infinitely low and
sweet. The hunter lias his song of the
chase, clear and bold. Even the bad
man of the tribe has his song, and It
was quick and appropriately brazen.
Harmony has not been developed
among the Eskimos. They sing only in
unison. But their melodies are weird
and wistful, often consisting of only
two or three motives, which are
strangely effective.
It is during the long polar night
that the Eskimo has time to rest in his
Igloo and sing his songs.
Its Day of Glory Forgotten.
You will perhaps remember that
when Dewey got through with the
Spanish warships in Manila bay, about
the only one left of any value was the
Isla De Luzon, a small gunboat which
the navy refitted and used effectively
in the archipelago for some years. Last
winter 1 saw her in one of the shal
low harbors of the West Indies. The
Navy departm ent had sold her for a
song to some skipper who bad refitted
her as a wrecking boat and was living
on her with his family among a small
wilderness of ropes anu winches. Of
course, with so many deinunds on the
treasury as there are, it would be non
sense to spend money for mere senti
ment, but I felt something of a pang
of regret that the only memento of
this glorious naval vi tory should meet
such a fate.—New York Correspondent
of the Indianapolis Star.

COW&S
HE VOGUE of the wearing of
the comb is increasing daily,
not to say nightly. A season
two back, the high Spanish comb
came in with the silken fringes
and shawls of Spain. And as the
seasons grew, so did the height and
width of the combs, until they
reached almost amazing propor
tions. And it was found and ad
mitted, that there were other wo
men in the world than the Span
ish women, who could wear a
comb with an air and dash.
Since combs eould no longer in
crease in size, something else had
*0 be done about them. So they
took on color.
They now come in all sorts of
lovely shades, all very brilliant,
to accompany matching gowns, or
to lend the dash of color to a
black velvet dress. Chinese lacqaer
red ones, and jade green»ones are
the most vivid and popular per
haps, so far. But these combs
cannot properly be called Spanish
combs, even though they are pat
terned after them in shape and
design.
But the variety in shapes and
sizes of the new combs for fall is
legion. Some are fan shaped,
ohers triangular, some oval; and
some so narrow as hardly to be
called combs at all, but rather pins.
T
One of these new narrow affair» is
shown in the sketch above marked
A.
or This is scarlet in color, and
has but two teeth, or prongs, at
the end, for thrusting in the hair.
Another model on this order is
shown in the sketch marked B.
This is really a “pin,” and is like
those worn in the Japanese and
Chinese coiffures. They are very
ornamental and absolutely a new
thing for the occidental headdress.
These pins when not of real jade
or coral are found in ebony and
ivory and real tortoise. But the
colored ones in lapis-lazuli, or tu r
quoise, or amber, are rich and
delicately lovely.
New and colorful combs are
made in pairs to complement the
new slick-back coiffures. One
comb is thrust in at each side of
the knot of hair at the nape of the
neck. Such a pair is shown above
in the photo, as worn by Nita
Naldi, leading woman in Para
mount motion pictures.
These
paired combs enhance the simple
headdress to perfection, and many
kinds are worn by Miss Naldi in
“ Blood and Sand,” the picture in
which she supports Rodolph Valen
tino and Lila Lee. In this picture
she plays the Spanish vamp, and
has occasion to flash many a fine
comb as well as a pair of flash
ing eyes.
