MIRACULOUS ESCAPE
Photoplay Star Near Death in
Runaway - Three Film Players
Seriously Injured as Stage-
ccach Overturns •
LADYS W A L T O N , screen
star, had a miraculous escape
from death when a stage
coach she was driving turned turtle
at Seven Oaks, Calif., where a
Universal company was on loca
tion. Vernon Steele, popular lead
ing man. was badly hurt about the
head and hands, and W ilfred N orth
and “ Baldv" Belmont so seriously
hurt that they were forced to retire
from the cast.
The accident occurred while th*
unit was filming "The Girl W ho
Ran W ild.” an adaptation of Bret
H arte’s “M’Liss," under the direc
tion of Rupert Julian. This par
ticular scene is one of the big mo
ments of the play and all the play
ers were working under a terrific
strain. The horses had been lashed
into a wild gallop and were dash
ing madly over the road, when the
front wheel struck a large boulder.
The old-fashioned coach crashed
over on its side and the frightened
horses dragged the vehiek for fifty
feet before they could be stopped.’
North and Belmont were uncon
scious when taken from the wreck
age and were rushed to a hospital
Steele was given treatm ent at the
home of a rancher and then re
moved to his hotel.
