good fo rtu n e the old word
“ w ireless” has now given way
to “ radio," a sh o rter and more
accurate term .
The am ateur
would have changed it anyway
long before this because he is
coming to a fuil realization of
what an endless am ount of wire
is needed to operate a really e f
ficient “ w ireless” set.
The a m ateu r as well as the pro
fessional finds him self working
with a maze of copper wires and
brass posts, plugs, and bases. The
head phones fo r instance have con
cealed in th eir covering a mile of
enam eled copper wire with a
diam eter about the size of a hu
m an hair.
It is in the anten n ae or aerials
fo r radio telephony th a t copper is
of the g re a te st use.
Probably
in no other service is copper sub
jected to a more critical te s t and,
in addition to providing unequalled
conductivity w here it is most need
ed, copper also perm anently re
sists
corrosion
and
furnishes
the necessary tensile st-en g th
DY
to resist the wind and its own
weight.
A ttem pts to su b stitu te
alum inun have met with little suc
cess because it lacks stren g th .
And so called “ copper clad” wire,
which is steel wire covered with
coppe?, gives only about forty per
cent as much conductivity as real
copper wire.
E xperim ents by the U. S. Bu
reau of Standards have led to the
conclusion that No 14 or No. 16
bare copper wire is the best. For
large antennae phosphor biim ze
made with seven strands ol No.
20 or No. 22 wire is nw-u satis
factory. This strand construction
absorbs considerable stress and
minimizes stretching.
The E lettra, M arconi’s radio
ship, is a good exa.up t of the
use of Copper, brass an.i bronze
where the be«t rad’o re uits are
successfully sought. Qu te aside
from the lavish use of rustless ma
terial in the construction ol Tie
ship itself the E lettra is equipped
with a radio room th at bristles
¡with these radio metals.
