According to common belief, cold

w eather the succeeding spring again
Incites new growth. Intensive Inves
tigations of Dr. Frederick V. Coville
of the federal Departm ent of Agricul
ture, which have been conducted over
a period of ten years, and which have
covered every phase of this subject,
dem onstrate th at both of these tra
ditional theories are erroneous. Dor
mancy In our native trees and shrubs
begins some tim e before the sta rt of
cold w eather each w inter; the appear
ance of Jack Frost is not necessary
for the establishm ent of complete dor
mancy. Furtherm ore, a fter such a
condition of dormancy has developed,
exposure of the plants to the ordinary
growing tem perature th ereafter does
not arouse them from th eir lethargy
so that they begin growth anew.
Interestingly enough, th e Coville ex
perim ents show th a t plants which
have responded to the lure of au
tumnal and w inter dormancy will not
react properly and resume normal
growth the following spring unless
they are subjected during the Interim
to a period of chilling. A certain
amount of cold Is essential to stim u
lating the plant growth.—Scientific
