The slxteen-foot T rinidad anaconda, or w ater boa, a t the Londop Zoologic al gardens, not long ago gave birth to tw enty-four young .ones. The new born snakes were tw enty-six inches long and about an inch in diameter a t the thickest part of the body. In color and m arking they resembled the a d u lts - th a t is. they were of a dark greenish hue with black spots. T hat number of young had been ex ceeded by a seventeen-foot snake at the New York Zoological park, which produced thirty-four young. Still an oth er anaconda has been known to produce thirty-seven a t a birth, and a large specimen of boa constrictor gave birth to sixty-four living young. The pythons differ from the boas in th a t they lay eggs and coil around a heap of them until they^liatcli. An official of the New York Zoo says th at the pythons produce from fifty to a hun dred egtjs at a time, and a specimen of python reticulatus deposited sixty eggs, about which she coiled, and from which she fought off all intruders, but h er efforts proved of no avail, for tLe eggs we«e iufertiie. Roosevelt's first appearance in the editorial columns of u New York news paper was probably that in the Eve ning Post of February 25., 1878. Roose velt was then a sophomore at liar- vurd, eighteen years oli¿. The Evening Post devoted a long editorial to the question w hether the English sparrow had been a benefit or a pest. It men tioned a recent discussion of the sub ject at an ornithological club in Cam- bridge. Mass., saying: “Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., of this city, gave the birds credit for doing some good, but thought that they often ate the buds of fruit trees, and be says that in Egypt they are wasteful devourers of grain.’’ In Roosevelt’s “An Autobiog raphy” a good deal is noted of his ornithological in terests during t h e s e y ears; these interests, of course, per sisted throughout his life. — -A K E IN A IJ> W E B R X N B A T U W errenrath, Famous Pho nograph Artist, Reveals Secrets of the Wax T his is to explain w hy you may Bometimes have been surprised to find th a t certain popular singers never make phonograph records. *1 hey don’t because they can’t and they can’t because they haven’t phonograph voices.
