This set requires, of course, an “A*
battery to light the vacuum tube fila
ment and a ”B” b a tte ry to furnish the
plate potential. The “A” battery should
be a six-volt storage battery of not
less th an 20 am pere hoars’ capacity.
One 22H-volt “B” battery unit is nec­
essary for a source of plate potential.
Assembling the Coil.
Starting one-half inch from one e n d ■
of the cardboard tube, wind on thej
No. 22 DCC wire until w ithin one-half;
inch of the other end of the tube. >
Fasten one end of the winding to the
tube, but allow some surplus wire on
the other end for making a connec­
tion. A fter the winding is in place
apply a thin coat of orange shellac to
hold the turn* in place.

A piece of cardboard tubing, outside
diam eter, three inches, and five Inches
long. It will cost about 10 cents.
One hundred feet of No. 22 DCC
m agnet wire. Cost about 25 cents.
One standard slider to fit *4 by U"
Inch brass rod. Cost about 40 cents.
A six-inch length of

diam eter Is just equal to the Inside
square blocks and then shellac or var­
nish them for appearance’ sake.
When thoroughly dry slip the two
end blocks into the wound tube und
by means of a few finishing brads
driven through the cardboard tube
fasten the end blocks to the wound
tube.
The slider is to be mounted on top
of the coll and should be capable of
making contact with any turn of the
wire on the tube. In order to remove
the Insolation from the wire, just un­
der the rod w here the slider moves
back and forth w rap a piece of sand­
paper around a thin piece of wood
and, using another niece of wood as a
guide, sandpaper the Insulation from
the winding.
