cal variations of grid potential can be
made to-produce symmetrical varia
tion in plate current, which are “K"
times the am plitude of the plate cir
cuit variations of a sim ilar two-elec
trode value with the same applied
grid potential. This means th at if a
three-electrode value be used in the
proper circuits in a radio receiver, the
signals can be made to appear as
though ¡the received signal Is “K”
times as strong as it actually is. If
two tubes are used with their proper
circuits in conjunction with a radio
receiver the received signals will ap
pear to be “K” times as strong as they
actually are and so the apparent
strength of the Incoming signal is
multiplied by “K” for each additional
tube added to the receiver circuit.
A vacuum tube used in conjunction
with a circuit th at will cause the plate
current to vary in exact proportion
to the applied grid voltage, but ap
parently caused bv “K” times the ac
tual grid voltage variation, is called
an amplifier. If the tube functioning
as an amplifier Is used to amplify the
incoming signal at radio frequency be
fore if is rectified by the detector. It
is termed a radio frequency amplifier.
If the tube functioning as an amplifier
is used a fter the incoming radio fre
quency has been rectified by the de
tector. it is term ed an audio frequency
amplifier.
Returning again to the character
istic curve of the three-electrode vac
uum tube, shown in Figure 23.
notice its shape. Suppose that a pos
itive potential was applied to the
grid by means of a “C” battery so
that the tube would function a t a
point represented by "A” on the
characteristic curve. If now the ap
plied grid potential from the “C” bat
tery be reduced by an amount rep
resented by A-R in F igure 23 the
corresponding reduction in plate cur
rent will be represented by R-E. On
the other fthnd If the grid potential
be increased by an amount repre
sented l»y A-C. where A-C equals R-V.
the corresponding increase in plate
current is C-D.
If I lie portion of the characteristic
curve In the region of E-A-D is a
tlon of the curve determines the am
plification of the tube. The more
nearly vertical the straight portion
of the curve Is, the greater will he
the change In plate current for a
given change in grid potential, or in
other words, the louder will be the
response in the telephone receivers
corresponding to a given received
signal.” The length of the straight
portion of the curve determines the
maximum variation In grid potentm!
th a t will cause the tube to function
properly without distortion.

TIPS TO RADIOISTS
At, Muncie, Ind., bacon was
fried by means ot a radio cur-
rent. At last an explanation for
that “frying” -noise.
Gifford Pinchot, nominated for
governor of Pennsylvania by the
vote of the people, acknowl-
edges his great Indebtedness to
the radio. A prim ary coil no
doubt played an im portant part.
An inventor of Chicago claims
to have Invented radio apparatus
that perm its of sucressful com
munication with the spirits.
We hope th at the untl-prohibi-
tionists will not m isinterpret
this claim.
The police departm ent of
Portland, Ore., has asked for an
appropriation for radio receiv-
lng and broadcasting stations
and to equip the police automo-
biles with radio apparatus. Cop-
per wire. It is needless to say,
will be used.
Lord Northclifi’e. famous Eng-
llsh editor, in speaking of the
future of journalism , recently
predicted that radio would have
an effect upon the publication
of .new spapers that wilt equal
the Invention of the linotype
and high-speed press. He said
th at radio would undoubtedly
come into general use of news
papers and uewggatheflng agen
cies.

Viscount Lascelle's sword might do

than a bent and hacked-up thing, un

Prince Henry offered to get a
hatchet, but the bride, with that pret
ty persistence in destruction which
sometimes impels the sweetest of
women to dig out a jammed washbowl
plug with her husband’s razor, re
jected It and sacrificed the sword.
Anticipating the wreckage that was
about to ensue the duke of York sug
gested a Lewis gun for the job, but
the lady went ahead, and strewed the
plain with crumbs and chips.
The devastation must have been aw
ful. W e can think of hut one parallq)
to that chaotic scene, and that oc
curred when J. D. Galloway returned
from overseas, where he had been
serving as a major, and was made to
serve a cake at a certain dull dinner.
He fell upon that cake as though it
had been a platoon of Prussians, and
soon had It beaten, butchered, routed
and dispersed all over his end of the
table. Whereupon O. K. Cushing re
marked :

Swimming ils quite easy, and is
even beneficial for th e s e . men who
have lost a limb, especially in salt
water, which seems to benefit the
maimed limb. At a swimming match
organized at Brighton for so-called
disabled men. 1G competitors entered
the water. Ten of these had lost one
leg, three were minus an arm, and the
remaining three had no legs at all.
The course was from the Palace pier
to the West pier, and 15 o f the 166
competitors covered the whole dis
tance. roughly three-quarters of a
mile. The one who failed had to leave
the w ater half-way owing to cramps in
the stump.
“It was perhaps the most remarkable
swim that has ever taken place in,
history,” comments the author of “Thej
Handbook for the Limbless,” from!
which the above facts are taken.
