would soon collect a sufficient nega
tive charge to reduce th e plate cur
rent to zero and the tube would cease
to function.
A grid leak having too low re sist
ance will uot allow a sufficiently high
negative charge to collect on the grid,
resu ltin g iu a very sm all plat# cur
ren t reduction and weak response in
th e telephone receivers.
On the other hand, if the grid leak
is of too high resistance, too high
negative charge will collect on the
grid and the condition of no grid leak
will be approached.
In any electrical circuit th a t has
a difference of potential applied to
It, th e c u rren t th a t will flow depends
upon the “im pedance” of th a t c ir c u it;
ju st as in the flow of w ater through
a pipe, th e q u a n tity of w a te r th a t
will flow when any given pressure
is applied depends upon how much
th e flow through the pipe is impeded
by the friction of th e particles of
w ater a g ain st th e sides of the pipe
and ag ain st one another.
In the electrical circuit, th e re la
tion betw een th ese th re e quantities
is th a t th e cu rren t which will flow
is equal to th e applied differences of
potential divided by the impedance,
w here the c u rre n t is in am peres, the
applied difference of potential is in
volts and the Im pedance in ohms. O r
