As a s ta rt let us suppose th a t “C”
b a tte ry voltage Is zero. T he opera-*
tion of the three-electrode tube would
then be exactly like th a t of a two-elec­
trode tube. Just as though th ere were
no grid. Like a tw o-electrode tube
when the filam ent C-D is brought to
incandescence by the “A” b a tte ry a
steady stream of electrons will be giv­
en off. which will be draw n over to
the plute E. P la te E is m aintained
a t a positive poten tial w ith respect
to the filament by th e “ B” battery.
Now if th e grid Is m ade positive
w ith respect to th e filam ent, it is pos­
sible to accelerate the flow of th e elec­
tron stream from the filam ent to the
p la te ; if the grid Is m ade negative
w ith respect to th e filam ent, th e flow
of the electron stream from th e fila­
m ent to th e plate will be retarded.
Or in o th er words, by m aking th e grid
positive or negative w ith respect to
the filam ent, it Is possible to increase
or counteract th e space charge. T he

m eans of controlling th e c u rren t in the
