Som e false and m alicious statem en ts have been m ade
and circulated throughout the com m unity, regarding an
incident that happened in my place of business som e
w eeks back. On or about April 20th , 1922, a wom an
with three little children cam e into my place, ask in g for
assistan ce. I was busy in my kitchen at th e tim e, and
gave her w hat m oney I had in m y pocket and offered
her m eals for h erself and th e children. The m oney she
;wcepte<l, but the m eals sh e refused1, sayin g sh e had
eaten only a few m inute» before. T hanking m e for the
assistance she departed.
It appears, as th e story goes, that I refused to give
her assistan ce, put her out. o f my house, and told her
to stay out.
It lias been m y policy In my business to feed or help
otherw ise, the needy. You w ill understand th a t I could
not feed free gratis a ll of th e men w ho ask for m eals, as
I am located on th e railroad,, and a s high as a hundred
a week hit my place, that are broke. I try to th e best
o f my ability to give them a few m in u tes’ work to earn
a m eal, but th e needy that are not able to work have
newer been turned from m y house hungry.
But 1 w ish to put th e story b efore th e public and let
them jm lg e for th em selves w hether it is th e tru th or not.
1 have a w ife, m other and sisters of my ow n, and why
should 1 not treat any poor wom an a s I w ould lik e to
have them treated if th ey were In th e sam e circum stance.
This story ha» sorely inojred my pride and nam e and
I CHALLENGE any person or persons to m ake a public
statem ent sayin g that th e story is th e tru th— an abso
lu te fact. If th ere is a person w ho «an prove such a
falsehood, I w ill gladly tak e th e consequences. But. I
feel th at a great in ju stice has been placed upon m e.
