A sim ple carbon rod has been dis covered by A. E. B aines, a leading gal- vanom etrist of London, which if held in the hands five m inutes will recharge the hum an system w ith nerve energy th a t lasts 12 hours. He says It is nothing new, but, ou th e contrary, was kndwn to the ancient E gyptians. He said the secret of it was lost many centuries ago. Mr. Barnes said th a t y ears ago while ho w as standing in the B ritish m useum before a pain ted lim e stone scu lp tu re of K h arfra, an Egyp tian king of the fo u rth dynasty, who built the second of the great pyram ids of Gizeh, he noticed the figure was holding two sm all rods shaped some thing like the grip on a bicycle. T here a fte r he began a series of long ex perim ents to discover the substance which tlie king held, hut he failed in his search until one day when he was trying to im prove the m icrophone, for > which he prepared several curbon pen cils which had been hardened by a special process of his own. He said th a t quite accidentally he touched one of these carbon pencils and was su r prised to find th a t his galvanic deflec tion swung from positive to negative. Tills led to fu rth e r experim ents, and he finally found th a t the ordinary arc carbon, when hardened by his process, gave out a force which could not he distinguished from nerve force. The bars a re about six inches long and are : capped a t the ends w ith celluloid. Mr. Baines asserted the carbon rods have been of greut aid in tre a tin g cases of j nervous breakdow n, deafness, anem ia and m any o th er com plaints. He de clared he did not know w hat tin* new force was.
