enteenth Century.

and more— are trying to preserve a
rem arkable old p e a sa n t's dwelling a t
H arreveld, a lonely ham let on the
h e a th e r in the province of G elderland.
It Is called los luis, dating from the
S eventeenth century and the last house
of tlie Saxon tyjie. Los, in the Geld-
ria u dialect, m eans open, by which it
is Indicated th a t th e house consists of
one room only and th a t th ere a re no
p artitio n s betw een the places for hous­
ing and sleeping fo r men and b e a sts;
cows and goats and chickens living
peacefully to g eth er w ith th e inm ates.
T here is no chlm neyplace; t h e wood
lire burns in a hole in th e floor, which
is of stone, and th e sm oke is allowed
to And an outlet as it pleases.
T he peasants, m an and wife, who
a re living here a re beset w ith the ex­
trem ely m odern, yet m ost u n fo rtu n ate
thought of having a wall built between
th e stable and th e dw elling room, a d d ­
ing a chim ney and building another
room, by all of which renovations the
house will he Irretrievably spoiled.
