stinctive craving fo r stones for gizzard­
grinding purposes, and these stones
m ust be assiduously sought, since
these birds never re st upon dry land,
but only upon ice.
A nother unexpected nam e in this list
of stone-sw allow ers is th a t of the Les­
ser R orqual. T his is a “baleen’’ whale,
feeding upon m inute crustacea, and
fish. From the peculiar method of
feeding which is, so to speak, forced
upon this anim al, it is unlikely that any
portion of Its food is scooped up from
the sea-floor; hence th e pebbles found
.
in its stom ach m ust be deliberately
swallowed, anil it i . supposed, for the i
purpose of digestion, or, rath e r, of |
tritu ra tio n . They are hardly likely to
be derived from the fish which a re en
