Mr. Possum was specially interested
when he found th a t Mrs. R abbit was,
among o ther things, p u ttin g up a great
deal of canned corn, and he decided
th a t when it w as d ark he would ju st
ta k e a peek Into her p a n try window
and see how m any cans she had.

tre e and one litnb hung low enough so
th a t Mr. Possum w ith a little care
could easily swing him self from it and
reach th e p a n try window.
Now tills m ight have been safe
enough if the limb had been a good
one, but it w asn’t, and when Mr. P os­
sum ran along it, before he could even
get ready to swing, “crackle, snap,”
w ent th e limb and down w ent Mr.
Possum into a b arrel of w hitew ash
Mrs. R abbit had ready to use on her
little ' house.
And th a t w as not th e w orst of It.
H e ran home so scared th a t he didn’t
rem em ber running a t all a fte r it was
over. Mrs. Possum didn’t know him,
but thought he was some terrib le
w hite c re a tu re come to carry off her
children and slam m ed th e door right
in his face.
All night Mr. Possum had to sit o u t­
side, the w hitew ash dripping from his
coat, and In the m orning, bright and
early, all the little bunnies and Mr.
and Mrs. R abbit-as well w ere standing
In fro n t of the house looking a t him.
Mrs. R abbit w anted to know w hat he
m eant by carrying off some of her
w hitew ash. “Mr. R ubblt and I and
all tlie little b u nnies tra c k ed you,
and you need not deny it," she suid.
Mr. Possum did uot try to deny it,
for w hat w as the use? H e w as all cov­
ered with the w hite stuff. B ut he did
try to tell Mr. and Mrs. R abbit th a t it
was all an accident, th a t he w as ju st
running along the limb and off it broke
and iie happened to fall into th e w hite­
w ash.
Mrs. Possum had found out it was
her husband by th is tim e, of course,
and she cam e out to say th a t w hat
