HETTY.
H E sim ple little nam e of H et
ty. suggestive of p leasan t home
ly dom esticity, lias a lofty sig
nificance. It is tra n sla te d to m ean “a
s ta r.” Perhaps, a fte r all, th e steady
bright insistence of tlie s ta rs may
have some psychic reference to the
generally accepted conception of the
Hett.vs of the world.
H etty is in reality the endearing
dim inutive given to th e more digni
fied H ester, but so coldly a u ste re is
th e la tte r nam e th a t H etty has come
to be bestow ed in baptism w ith com
pleted disregard fo r its proper pred
ecessor. •
H etty cam e into existence by a ra th
e r com plicated evolution through sev
e ral languages. T he fair d a u g h ter of
th e trib e of B enjam in whose royalty
insured h er peoples’ safety, w as called
Atossa. H er nam e in the P ersian lan
guage — quite unpronouncable — w as
combined w ith the L atin word fo r s ta r
“ste lla ” and from th e union, came the
m odem estrella. In th e Septuagint,
tlie R om ans m ake th is word H estera
or E sthera.
In England, the “a ” w as dropped and
H ester and E sth e r were, bestow ed as
fem inine nam es. The la tte r becam e E s
sie when th e Inevitable dim inutive was
forthcom ing, and H e ster, soon gave
place to H etty, though tbe origlual
form w as usually preserved on the
church registers. It w as fo r Am erica
to gayly discard th e p roper apiiellative
and su b stitu te H e tty fo r all occasions.
H e tty ’s talisinanlc stone is the tu r
quoise, which prom ises h er ste a d fast
friends, tru e love, and freedom from
danger. If she sees the new moon re
flected In th e stone, she will have ra re
good luck. S atu rd ay is h er lucky day
and five h er lucky num ber.
