the flat expanse of level p rairie
land In n o rth ern and cen tral Illinois
find it h ard to believe they a re still in
the sam e s ta te when they invade H a r
din county in this corner of “E gypt,”
as so uthern Illinois is called. A bit
of rugged scenery has been set down
in this isolated corner, fram ed by the
g rea t bend of the Ohio river. The
hills, which stre tc h back fo rty m iles
from the river, a re a continuation of
the O zarks, extending e a st through
M issouri and so uthern Illinois.
E lizabethtow n has the distinction,
unusual in Illinois, of being a county
seat w ithout railro ad , telegraph or
electric lights. Its m ail still arriv es
by boat and m ost of its freig h t and
passen g er traffic is w ater borne. The
few roads over the hills a re w retched
a t th e ir best, and a t th eir w orst im
passable fo r th re e m onths out of the
year.
1 ills town is the second oldest se t
tlem ent in Illinois. In th e m ain p art
of its brick hotel, stan d in g on a high
-Wuff above the river, the M arquis d a
L a fay e tte spent a night w hen he vis
ited th is country in 1824. T he m ain
room of the hotel w as erected in 1807,
but ad d itions d a te from 1840 and Civil
w ar days.
