Dr. Farrand Becomes President of Cornell
WHITE HOUSE FACTS.
Thousands of visitors flock to the
White House, so that today it is the
best known residence in the world, but
comparatively few people know the
chief facts about this home of their
President.

The Wlvte House is so named be-
cause it is built of white freestone.
The site was selected by President
Washington and Maj. Peter Charles
I.’Enfant, planner of the capital city,
In 1791.
The architect was James Hoban of
Dublin. The plans were chosen by
competition.
Here are four eminent Americans, gathered at Ithaca the other day for the inauguration of Dr. Livingston Far-
yand as president of Cornell university and the laying of the corner stone of a new million and a half dollar chemistry
laboratory for which George F. Baker, New York hanker, gave the money. Left to right, they are: Charles M. Schwab,

Aviator’s Life Has Its Ups and Downs
NDIANAPOLIS.—Carl Stieler, who
spent his $43,000 share of the $234.-
000 Standard Oil company mail rob­
bery at Whiting, Ind., in-1019 in a two-
year orgy of airplane and automobile
buying and travel, was arraigned in
the federal court here. The wife who
was with him while he spent the
money, and who, when it was gone,
took in washing and scrubbed floors
to help him, is with him.
“If I hadn’t given myself up the po­
lice would never have got me,” said
Stieler, who is twenty-three years old.

when we got to Los Augeles. Even
when Bessie and I were married under
