figures fo r 1920 now available In some
detail fo r 28 states reveal. The figures
show more than 2.000.000 illite ra te s in
a group o f nine Southern states, one-
th ird o f them native whites.
Indications are that the arm y o f il
lite ra te s in the U nited States w ill not
fa ll fa r short o f 6.000,000 or 7,000.000.
There has been progress, however, and
notably in the Southern states. Geor-
gfik fo r example, has 328,838 illit e r
ates, but the percentage o f illite ra c y
is 15.3, as compared with- 20.7 in 1910.
South Educating Its People.
Alabama has reduced its illite ra c y
from 22.9 per cent in 1910 to 16.1 per
cent in 1920; Louisiana from 29 per
cent to 21.9 per ce n t; M ississippi from
22.4 per cent to 17.1 per ce n t; South
Carolina from 25.7 per cent to 18.1 per
cent, and N orth C arolina fro m 18.6 per
cent to Í3.1 per cent.
A t th is rate, even w ithout the pro
posed help o f the federal government,
the South should be v irtu a lly free
from illite ra c y in 30 years. In the
meantime the states tha t have a large
foreign-horn population are faced w ith
even greater problems than the South
